Jack

When his wife passed away, the house became quieter.

The routines changed. The conversations disappeared. The life they had built together suddenly felt different.

But Jack remained.

An 80-pound Goldendoodle with a gentle spirit, he became more than a pet. He became a daily companion through grief, a reason to step outside, and a steady presence on both the easy days and the hard ones.

This portrait was commissioned as a gift to honor that bond.

Because Jack and his owner shared so much of life outdoors in Colorado, I chose a setting filled with sunlit grasses and open sky. Hints of blue reflect through the landscape, creating a sense of light, freedom, and the beauty they experienced together on countless walks and adventures.

Rather than painting every detail, I used expressive brushwork and layered color to capture something deeper than likeness alone. The goal was to preserve the feeling of Jack—the comfort of his presence, the loyalty in his companionship, and the quiet way he helped carry someone through a season of loss.

That is what I love most about painting commissioned portraits.

They are rarely just about a face.

They are about a relationship.

A story.

A life shared.

And sometimes, they become a way of saying thank you to those who stood beside us when we needed them most.

Some companions walk beside us for only part of our lives, yet leave paw prints on our hearts forever.
