Some portraits capture a face. Others capture a relationship.

This is the first selfie I’ve ever painted, and it immediately drew me in. The camera angle, looking upward, created beautiful, unexpected shadows and unusual perspectives that transformed an everyday moment into something visually compelling. Robin’s adorable pup, Scooby, peering into the frame from an equally unconventional angle, adds a playful energy and became one of my favorite parts of the painting.

For the past two years, Robin Cheers has been far more than my instructor. She has been a steady guide, gently encouraging me when I needed confidence and pushing me when I was ready to grow. She has challenged me to see more, risk more, and ultimately become a better artist.

Robin is widely respected for her remarkable talent and long list of accomplishments, such as elected member of the historic salmagundi club; signature membership in AIS; and teaching workshops abroad in France to name a few, but those are only part of her story.

What has impacted me most is her character. She teaches with humility, generosity, patience, and genuine joy. She has an extraordinary ability to make every student feel seen while quietly inspiring them to reach beyond what they thought possible.

Over time, my admiration for Robin has grown into a treasured friendship. This portrait is my way of honoring not only an exceptional artist and teacher, but the person whose encouragement has forever changed my own artistic journey.

Sometimes the greatest gift a teacher gives isn’t simply technique. It’s helping you discover possibilities you never knew existed.
