This acrylic portrait painting was created as a master study from a lesson by the extraordinarily gifted contemporary portrait artist Kara Bullock, using her original reference photograph and instruction. Renowned for her expressive fine art portraits, luminous color, and masterful brushwork, Kara’s work has become a tremendous source of inspiration in my own journey as a contemporary fine artist.
This portrait study provided an opportunity to slow down and focus on the foundations of portrait painting—color harmony, value relationships, edge control, expressive brushwork, and creating emotion through light and atmosphere. Rather than developing an original composition, I immersed myself in Kara’s teaching, carefully observing her process to deepen my understanding of contemporary realism, figurative painting, and the subtle techniques that bring a portrait to life.
As a professional portrait painter, I believe that continual learning is essential to artistic growth.
