Some portraits make the passage of time suddenly visible.
I remember Andrew Robbins as a child, playing near my parents’ home in Port Huron, Michigan, where his family lived just two doors away. His grandmother had also been my high school teacher, weaving our families into the same neighborhood story across generations.
I painted Andrew at his Princeton graduation, standing at the beginning of an extraordinary new chapter. Today, he works for SpaceX. It is remarkable to think that the little boy I remember playing down the street would one day build a life connected to space exploration.
Through expressive brushwork and Princeton’s distinctive orange and black, I wanted to capture his warmth, confidence, and sense of possibility. Andrew’s brother, mother, and stepfather will soon join him in A Hundred Faces: Brushstrokes of Humanity—a family story unfolding one portrait at a time.
