Frida: Kindred Spirits
Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was a Mexican painter celebrated for her deeply personal self-portraits and exploration of identity, resilience, and love. She is portrayed here with Fulang-Chang, the spider monkey who appeared throughout many of her most recognized works.
Set against a dark background, the monkey becomes intertwined with Frida’s presence—both companion and symbol. The contrast of light and shadow draws attention to her steady gaze while hinting at the experiences, relationships, and inner strength that shaped her life.
Frida’s work has long inspired me as an artist. She also reconnects me to the eight and a half years my family lived in Mexico, a country whose people, colors, culture, and spirit continue to hold a special place in my heart. No collection of faces that has influenced my artistic journey would feel complete without her.
