Luscia | A Hundred Faces: Brushstrokes of Humanity

Luscia became part of A Hundred Faces: Brushstrokes of Humanity through one of those wonderful chains of connection that I could never have planned.

I met her grandmother, Tish, through our mutual friend, artist Peter Maier, who worked as a General Motors designer alongside my father, watercolor artist and retired GM designer Terry Henline. After Tish moved to Austin, Texas, our friendship grew. We later discovered that my husband had also been mentoring Tish’s son in his business.

Tish has been a generous supporter of my art and is also connected to the work of artist Woodrow Blagg. Now, years after all of those seemingly unrelated connections began, I have the pleasure of painting her two granddaughters.

Luscia’s dark hair, sparkling eyes, and enormous smile give her a presence entirely her own. In this original acrylic portrait, I wanted to capture that exuberant personality while preserving the expressive brushwork, color, and looseness that characterize my contemporary portrait paintings.

Two sisters. Two wonderfully individual personalities. And another unexpected connection woven into A Hundred Faces.

Original acrylic portrait on 8 x 8-inch gesso board by Austin artist Kara Manza. Part of A Hundred Faces: Brushstrokes of Humanity, a collection of 100 contemporary painted portraits.
